Many of my clients appreciate that I am able to meet them outside in quiet, wild places where we can unpack the hard things while in connection with nature. I love this type of work, and ground everything we do in the wide body of research surrounding nature-based wellness and psychology.
What might an outdoor session look like?
Just as in every session with me, outdoor sessions are tailored to who you are and what you're moving through. They are always flexible; you can choose to meet in the office one week, and out in nature another. In general, when we are outdoors:
I meet folks in a local, quiet, space that has trees and water and plants and room to either walk or sit (or both).
You don't have to feel "fit" or "strong" to participate, although I will ask you if your doctor would say there is any reason an outdoor session wouldn't be appropriate.
The focus of each session on therapeutic counselling, not on physical exercise, although of course gentle walking and movement is a valuable benefit of the treatment plan.
The first session will usually be in my office to get to know each other and to make sure outdoor therapy is a good fit. Again, I can be flexible with this -- an initial in-office session is not mandatory, but it is best practice for most folks.
When we are outdoors I still pull from therapeutic modalities like CBT, ACT, narrative therapy, self-compassion therapy, etc. In addition, I incorporate nature as metaphor, nature as co-therapist, nature-based mindfulness interventions, and research like attention restoration and biophilia theories to work with nature as an important part of who we are and how we grow.
